Poppies in Bloom: In the Heart of Repetek 🌹

The Repetek State Biosphere Reserve, covering an area of 34,600 hectares, considers its primary mission to be the protection and restoration of flora and fauna, as well as the preservation of its pristine condition for future generations. As one of the first nature reserves established in Central Asia, it stands out among other protected areas for its unique desert landscapes and exceptional natural beauty.

The reserve is located in the heart of the Eastern Karakum, 70 kilometers southwest of the city of Turkmenabat. Long-term scientific research has confirmed the extraordinary biodiversity of this territory. To date, the reserve has recorded 29 species of mammals, 202 species of birds, 22 species of reptiles, 1,343 species of invertebrates, and 120 species of plants representing 32 different families.

In recent years, the systematic efforts of Repetek's specialists have led to a significant increase in the populations of rare birds, including the common buzzard, golden eagle, Egyptian vulture, lesser kestrel, bustard, and desert sparrow. The plant life of the reserve consists predominantly of endemics—plants that are found nowhere else in the world. Many of them possess distinct medicinal properties. Detailed scientific information about these plants is featured in the multi-volume encyclopedic work of the National Leader of the Turkmen people, Hero-Arkadag, titled "Medicinal Plants of Turkmenistan."

This spring, the Karakum Desert has been transformed, donning a "green cloak" and covered with carpets of blooming poppies, which lends a special charm to the protected areas. Currently, staff from the scientific department are conducting active spring field observations. It is also worth noting the Yeraji sanctuary, which is part of the reserve and is equally famous for its unique fauna and rich ornithological diversity.

A significant event was a training seminar conducted by the Turkmenabat City Council of the primary organizations of the Trade Union of Agricultural Workers. During the meeting, participants discussed in detail issues of ecology, the protection of the Karakum's natural heritage, and the implementation of the state strategy for ensuring the country's environmental well-being. The specialists of the Repetek Reserve express their sincere gratitude to Hero-Arkadag and Arkadagly Hero Serdar for their invaluable contribution to the preservation of the natural riches of our Motherland.
