🏔️ Koytendag prepares for UNESCO World Heritage Listing
A significant step has been taken toward including the unique natural wonders of Koytendag in the UNESCO World Heritage List. From May 5 to May 8 of this year, experts from the Michael Succow Foundation for Nature Conservation (Germany) conducted a working visit to Koytendag. According to the official website of the Ministry of Environmental Protection of Turkmenistan, the primary goal of the mission was to study the region's unique natural environment and assess its compliance with international criteria.

This large-scale project is a joint initiative between Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, encompassing Koytendag’s famous caves, gorges, and karst formations. This unified mountain system, situated along the border of the two countries, holds global significance due to its exceptionally rare flora and fauna. While the relevant documents were submitted to the UNESCO World Heritage Centre back in 2025, this visit marks a crucial stage in the ongoing preparatory work.

Significant efforts lie ahead to refine the nomination dossier and finalize the documentation package. The inclusion of Koytendag in the international list will help preserve this extraordinary corner of the planet for future generations and strengthen environmental cooperation across Central Asia.
