Ecological calendar: Today is International Mother Earth Day
International Earth Day, celebrated annually on April 22, is recognized as one of the most large-scale environmental events on the planet. The history of this day began in 1969 when, following a massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, Senator Gaylord Nelson proposed creating a nationwide day to focus attention on the environment. The first mass actions, held on April 22, 1970, served as a powerful catalyst for the creation of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the passage of fundamental laws concerning clean air, water, and the preservation of endangered species.
By 1990, the initiative had gained global reach and received international support. Earth Day gave significant momentum to the development of waste recycling programs and became an important milestone on the way to the historic UN Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992. Today, this date is dedicated annually to urgent environmental challenges, reminding each of us of the importance of preserving the planet and the collective fight against climate change.
