🦢 Bionic prosthetic helps injured stork walk again: A unique operation in Tianjin
In 2024, the "Sunshine" Wildlife Rescue Center in Tianjin received a rare patient—an Oriental stork with a severe injury. Its left leg had become entangled in a net, and due to a developing infection, the limb had to be amputated. As reported by THP, citing the "Big Asia" media resource, the bird was doomed without the ability to walk and fly properly.
To give the stork a second chance, center specialists developed a unique bionic prosthetic. The engineers faced a difficult task: creating a design that would serve as a reliable support during takeoff and act as an effective shock absorber during landing. To achieve this, a special mechanical component with a precision adjustment system was integrated.
Recently, the stork was fitted with the final version of the prosthetic. Made of high-quality silicone and colored in a natural orange hue, the device is almost indistinguishable from a real leg. Upon returning to its enclosure, the bird quickly adapted: it is already confidently stepping on its new leg and even balancing on rocks.
Center staff is currently monitoring the "long-legged patient's" rehabilitation. If the adaptation to the artificial limb is successful, the stork will be released back into its natural habitat.
