Nature's winged guardian: The common myna and its role in the ecosystem

The name of this bird is the Common Myna. Due to the unique chatter and sounds it makes, it is also locally referred to as "jakyrryk" or "jokjoky."

Measuring just 23 to 28 centimeters in length, its weight ranges between 80 and 140 grams. It features a brown body, contrasting with a black head and neck. Distinctive yellow patches encircle its eyes. The bird's bill is also bright yellow, and when it takes flight, large white patches become clearly visible on its wings.

The common myna is native to South Asia, specifically originating from regions around India and Pakistan. However, today it has widely spread beyond our region, establishing populations across Australia and Africa as well.

Mynas feed primarily on insects, especially grasshoppers that pose a threat to agricultural crops. Remarkably, just a single breeding pair of mynas can eliminate nearly 150,000 harmful pests in a single year!

Scientifically, this species is known as Acridotheres tristis.
